Vacation passes so quickly
I don’t know if Murphy has a law about vacations, but if he doesn’t he should. I think everyone will agree that your week of vacation passes twice as fast as a week at work. Last week I spent my vacation at the beach. The time flew by like it always does when you’re relaxing and having fun.
I love the beach, and the ocean, and even the sand. There is nothing more relaxing to me than sitting on the beach, under the shade of an umbrella with my toes in the sand while reading a good book. I also enjoy walking along the beach. picking up seashells, while searching for shark’s teeth. It may sound like a waste of time to some, but for me it is therapy.
I’m not thinking about anything else but looking for the elusive shiny black teeth. Last week I only found three, two tiny ones and one nice size specimen. Actually, I came to realize you don’t find shark’s teeth, they find you. I realized this late in the week when walking on the same path of sand leading to the ocean that I had walked upon every day.
Yet, that day a shark’s tooth lay on the thick sand in front of me waiting to be picked up. My discovery brought to mind the song I used to sing as a child with the lyric “I’m looking over a four-leaf cover I overlooked before...” How many shark’s teeth did I overlook last week I wonder. I was with my granddaughters at the beach and they joined me in picking up shells after high tide.
Many were broken ones but we didn’t care. We enjoyed examining the pastal like colors such as shades of pink, orange, purple and gray and collected many over the course of the week. After our walk along the beach we ended up at the pier rewarding ourselves with a cone of hand-dipped ice cream. The girls love to try catching a ride with a wave on their boogie boards while I stand back and cheer them on.
And I love that they are old enough that I could sit back and watch while the ocean waves tickled my toes and the soft sea breezes blew over me in the hot summer sun. Well, it was a great week to relax with family and friends at the beach, but I must admit, it is also good to come home. Besides, there’s always a good book to read!
