LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Civil rights leader Lowery will be missed

It is with deepest sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of a dear friend and mentor, the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. This civil rights icon worked tirelessly for the rights of people of color. He founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others. He was president of this powerful organization from 1977 to 1997. He was called “The Dean of Civil Rights.”

On a personal note, he was the hand of guidance in our formative years. I will always remember the support he gave to me and my family during the passing of my godfather, the Rev. Dr. Horace P. Sharper, previous pastor of the Trinity Baptist Church, and local civil rights leaders of this City of Florence. He spent a lot of time with his friends here in Florence, the Rev. Dr. Horace Sharper and the Rev. Dr. Vandroth Backus.

We will miss this giant of a man who had a heart of gold and the courage of a lion.

Rev. E.J. McIver

Florence
